Statement

Statement from Councilmember Matt Frumin Regarding Today’s Shootings in Ward 3

Around 7:10 am today, our community experienced a deeply disturbing and tragic event. A suspect shot and killed an adult woman near the 3600 Block of Wisconsin Ave and then fled on a Metrobus. Metropolitan Police Department officers subsequently intercepted the bus near Wisconsin Avenue and Upton Street, NW. While officers were evacuating passengers, the suspect pulled a firearm from a bag, aiming the weapon at the officers. They shot the suspect, who was later pronounced dead on the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

My staff and I have been on the scene, and I remain in close communication with the MPD 2nd District, as well as our partners at the Metro Transit Police, as they investigate the shooting.

My heart goes out to the victim and her loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time, as well as to the innocent bystanders, who were caught in the midst of this terrifying situation. I am grateful to the Metropolitan Police Department for their quick action; the responding officers acted with heroism and averted what could have been an even more tragic incident.

Indications are that the victim and suspect were known to each other and had a prior domestic relationship. The impacts of gun violence and domestic violence are devasting. While the investigation continues, I want to emphasize that help is available for anyone in our community who may be struggling with domestic violence or in need of support.

Please utilize the following resources if you or someone you know needs assistance:

  • Emergency: Call 911
  • Non-Emergency: Call 311
  • DC Victim Service Hotline: 1-844-443-5732
  • MPD Domestic Violence Unit: 441 4th Street, NW | (202) 727-7137

I remain committed to the safety of every resident in Ward 3. I will continue to monitor the situation as the investigation proceeds and work to ensure our community has the support it needs to heal.
